5 Adventurous Things to do in Houston this Summer

Has summer stirred your thirst for adventure? Want to create more stimulating memories instead of hiding out in the mall or movies absorbing the AC? If you’re looking for a fun and adventurous group activity to do in Houston this summer, read on for five of our top picks.

Climbing Gyms

rock climbing

Okay, maybe you’re not ready to give up the AC but still want an adventure. Houston has several climbing gyms that allow you to safely build your rock climbing skills without going outside and tangling with actual rocks.

Momentum Silver Street is one of the biggest, with 43,000 square feet of climbing terrain, yoga and fitness areas, and places to hang out with friends. Momentum is a Utah-based chain that designs its gyms to resemble crags and canyons. So when it cools off a little, you’ll be prepared to take your skills outside. The space hosts events, parties, and large groups. You can schedule a two-hour session for your group to explore the climbing walls, or plan a Learn to Boulder class that includes a small competition with prizes.

Indoor Skydiving

We hear you. It’s hot. So one more indoor adventure: Skydiving. The invention of vertical wind tunnels means you can experience the thrill of flying without having to step out of a plane. At iFly Indoor Skydiving, a certified flight instructor trains you in hand signals and proper body position. Then you gear up in a flight suit, helmet, and goggles and enter the flight chamber. Flyers can be as young as three years old. There’s no upper age limit. iFly accommodates corporate groups, birthday parties, youth and scouting groups, bar mitzvahs, bachelorette parties, and other groups.

Wakeboarding

wakeboarding

Wakeboarding usually means being towed by a motorboat while riding a shortboard similar to a surfboard. But at Wake Nation Houston, a system of cables allows riders to dispense with the boat. Instead, overhead cables pull riders around a 12-acre lake. Beginners can learn the basics, while experienced wakeboarders can practice their acrobatics on jumps and rails. Wake Nation Houston caters to church groups, corporate teams, bachelor/bachelorette parties, family reunions, or anybody else looking for a fun, wet time. Ages 8 and up.

Skating at Greenspoint Spring

Skaters will love the 78,000 square feet of space at Greenspoint Spring Recreation Area. This is the largest skatepark in the country, with a 10-foot bowl, 12-foot vertical ramp banks, ledges, square obstacles and all kinds of other good stuff. The recreation area also includes a wheelchair accessible park designed to engage kids who are sight or hearing-impaired, or on the autism spectrum. This is a great destination for your group of kids with mixed abilities.

Horseback riding

Cypress Trails offers beginner to advanced trail rides, ranging from one hour to all day. Some include a picnic lunch. They love to host weddings, corporate gatherings, reunions, and birthday parties. Scouting troops can arrange to complete their animal science merit badges. Children 8 and up can ride the horses. Younger kids can experience an unforgettable pony party.
