If your schedule allows it, autumn is a prime time to travel. Tourist crowds thin, airfares drop, and even cold places haven’t gotten too cold yet. Here are a few alluring fall getaways to tempt you into taking a few days off and boarding a plane to fun.
Denver, Colorado
October is the best month for fall foliage in Denver. This outdoorsy city lends itself to sightseeing by bike. Admire the yellow cottonwood trees from the Cheery Creek Bike Trail. those who like some suds with their holiday will enjoy the Great American Beer Festival, Denver Beer Fest, and Denver Oktoberfest.
San Diego, California
You might hear a Beach Boys song playing in your head when you read the name San Diego, or envision surfboards and summer sun. But guess what? San Diego is still plenty warm in fall. With an average October high of 74, you can still enjoy strolling the beaches, dining at outdoor restaurants, and spending a day exploring fabulous Balboa Park. And when the temperature dips down to 60 degrees at night, you can build a bonfire on the beach.
Albuquerque, New Mexico
New Mexico is beautiful in every season. But the big draw in October is the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the biggest hot air balloon festival in the world. Seeing hundreds of colorful balloons float through a bright blue sky is an unforgettable sight. While you’re there, you can decide whether you’re a red or green chili person. New Mexico is famous for both.
Chicago, Illinois
Are you more into culture than the outdoors? Chicago always has a lot going on, but here are a few October cultural highlights:
- International Film Festival, October 10-21. Think of how many interesting films you can see in 11 days!
- The Chicago Architecture Foundation’s Open House Chicago. From October 13-14, the public can access 200 buildings around Chicago. Behind-the-scenes tours for free!
- Arts in the Dark, on October 20, is a nighttime parade of artists celebrating Halloween. Think giant puppets and bizarre yet family-friendly floats.
Portland, Maine
You didn’t think we were going to leave New England’s famous fall foliage off the list, did you? Everybody should experience fall in New England at least once in their lives. Leaf peepers will be taking over Maine in October, the height of the state’s fall foliage. Best weeks? For central Maine, visit October 6-11. Western and southern Maine should peak the following week. October 20-25 is the top leaf color time for coastal Maine.
